SHEEP were shorn of their fleeces in lightning fast times – as quick as 35 SECONDS – at last Friday night’s forerunner to Lesmahagow Show.

Shearers from all over the world thrilled a 150-crowd at Brocketsbrae during a three-hour evening shearing extravaganza.

Some £2000 in prize money was distributed among the winners at an event contested in Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories.

“The sheep shearing went very well,” said show secretary Isabella Christie. “This competition was a tremendous sight for the spectators and the shearers made it all look so very easy.”

A British Blue cow and calf bred by A and CS Comrie of Stonebyres won ’Gow Show’s overall Champion of Champions prize to scoop the South Lanarkshire Vase and a special donated prize of animal feed from Galloway & MacLeod.

“The winning cow was of fantastic stature and very impressive,” Isabella said.

As well as cattle, sheep, Clydesdale horses and poultry, the show also featured a Young Farmers West Area Tug of War contest, won by Biggar.
