Medical charity backs end to Lanimer Day drinking

A MAJOR Scottish medical charity has thrown its support behind moves to have street drinking on Lanimer Day banned.

The highly-influential Medics Against Violence is to tell South Lanarkshire Council that it is behind the police in asking it to remove the special 24 hour exemption from bylaws banning drinking in public places during the annual celebration.

As previously reported, the police asked for the Lanimer street drinking `right’ to be removed after “drink-fuelled violence” tainted last year’s celebration.

This is the first week of a two week consultation period the council is running to gauge public opinion.

It runs until January 24, and there are ‘Opinionmeters’ in Lanark’s public buildings to allow folk to have their say.
