New show in Biggar is match made in heaven

BOSTON Marriage is a bitingly funny play for adults about the relationship between two female friends and their put-upon maid, full of double entendre and snappy dialogue.

The play is set in the 1890s in Anna’s drawing room. Anna, played by Alison Bishop, is about to receive Claire (Julie Devine), her friend and former ‘significant other’, who has come to visit but with a very particular request.

Delivered through quick, witty dialogue, mixed with double entendres and vernacular expressions, the play explores the relationship between the two women and their poor maid, Catherine, played by Rachael Mutl.

The play’s director, David Bishop, says the sparkling script offered the rare opportunity to stage a show with an all-female cast.

He said: “Writer David Mamet is best known for muscular and masculine scripts like the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross, or for his male-dominated screenplays for films like The Untouchables.

“With this play, Mamet wanted to prove he could write for women.

“In Boston Marriage he channels the spirit of Oscar Wilde to create a witty comedy set in an 1890s drawing room.”

Producer Carole Davidson praises the cast of three - Alison, Julie and Rachael.

“This is a challenging play for the actors, with so much to learn, but they have all done a brilliant job,” said Carole.

“It’s great that Biggar Theatre Workshop is going beyond musicals and pantomimes to stage witty plays like this.”

Biggar Theatre Workshop’s production of Boston Marriage will run from Wednesday, May 20, to Saturday, May 23, at Biggar Corn Exchange, starting at 8pm.

Tickets cost £8 for Wednesday and £10 for the other dates and are available from Hamiltons Newsagents or from the Corn Exchange website.

The show features adult language and is not suitable for children.
