ALTHOUGH it’s 717 years since he was last in town in person, William Wallace returns to Lanark – at least in spirit – on May 10.

That is when the Royal Burgh celebrates a special Wallace Day event with parts of the town centre transformed back to the Lanark the Braveheart would have known when he lived here in 1297 and sparked off the Wars of Independence.

Organised by the Community Council as a strictly non-political event to mark the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn, a series of entertainments and attractions will be staged in the Market End/Castlegate/Delves Park area, near to where Wallace reputedly lived with the local lass he married, Marion Braidfute.
