String leader of the pack

RENOWNED violinist Nicola Benedetti leads an exciting collaboration this week, allowing Glasgow’s young string players the chance to learn from a professional.

In association with Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, Nicola will be taking time out from her Scottish tour to head a series of performances at city halls alongside up and coming talent from the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Events kick off with Intermezzo on Friday (tomorrow) – and all are welcome to come and listen, with tickets (£5 for adults, and includes a free child place) available from the concert halls box office.

Saturday is practice day – and the violinist and her protégés will need it, with a weighty programme planned for the following day.

There’s more from 2pm on Sunday, beginning with Inspiring Encounter, followed by Bartok’s Divertimento at 3.30pm, and finally, a performance by the Junior Conservatoire Orchestra at 7.30pm.

Nicola explained: “I have wanted to do something like this for years as an extension of my music education work. I’m just delighted to have the support of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, Creative Scotland, NYOS and RCS.

“I really hope the weekend will be insightful and enjoyable for the 40 young people and children participating, but also for the public coming to join in and watch our sessions.”
