AS the face of the Taj Mahal in Biggar, Abed Ullah is known for his wide smile.

But he has even more reason to smile this week, after being voted Maitre D’ of the Year in the annual Scottish Curry Awards.

“It still hasn’t sunk in,” Abed on Tuesday, adding that he was still in shock the morning after the winners of the 7th annual awards were announced at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow.

“I did not expect to win it.

“I was in the final last year as well, and that alone was a great achievement.”

He was “shocked, excited, happy” when his name was announced as the winner.

“It was quite a surprise,” he added.

And what makes a top Maitre D’?

“I don’t know,” said Abed modestly. “Knowledge? I try to speak to everyone who comes in. It is a personalised service.”
