* KIRKTON Players cast and crew were getting set to perform their latest production, Plaza Suite, by Neil Simon. The Players were also gearing up for the Glasgow District One Act Festival.

* Forth welcomed its new minister with Rev Sarah Ross being inducted at a service at St Paul’s Church in the village later that week.

* Carluke residents were divided on the takeover by Somerfield of the town’s Safeway store. Among those concerned was Joey Adam, from Carluke Development Trust.

* TEN days of entertainment were brought to a close with some Hallowe’en magic at Biggar Little Festival. Nearly 50 events were enjoyed by crowds over the previous week and a half.

* The Dale Centre adult learning facility in Lanark’s Yvetot Avenue was to be demolished and replaced on the existing site. The project was going to cost South Lanarkshire Council an estimated £2.8 million and would be up and running by the summer of 2006.

* Youngsters at Coulter Primary School were working on a backpack project aimed at sending basic school supplies to young children in the West African country of Liberia.

* Forth and Wilsontown Bowling Club joined forces with Motherwell Miners BC to raise more than £1600 for the Monklands Hospital Renal Unit.

* Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans visited Crossford’s Valley International Park to sign copies of his authorised biography written by Derek Dohren. Evans was Reds manager between 1994 and 1998, winning one trophy.

* THREE Carluke youngsters were given a sneak preview of just some of the £1,500 worth of fireworks that were going to be set off during Carluke & District’s Round Table’s annual fireworks display. Four-year-old Rachel Thomson and Helen (8) and Robert Cleary (5) were to be joined by hundreds of other youngsters at the event.

* The demise of Clydesdale’s Care of Gardens scheme led to elderly tenants being ripped off by unscrupulous contractors. The sad facts were outlined at a meeting of Clydesdale’s housing committee when councillors considered a report on the effects of the scheme’s collapse.

* Carluke man John Moulds was awarded a Fellowship by the Institute of Training and Development. The Institute was one of the leading professional bodies representing educationalists in the UK.

* The latest report on Clydesdale’s alarming level of rent arrears revealed the continuing rise in the number of people who were behind with their payments. A total of 3,172 tenants owed the district council almost £330,000 in rent.

* Contractors involved in a £50,000 window replacement scheme in Carluke were issued with an ultimatum by Clydesdale District Council – pay up or we move in! The company came under fire for failing to complete a project which should have been completed seven months earlier.

* Law OAP Association chairman Tom Craig, Gala Queen Sharon McLeod and Champion James Martin were pictured at the village autumn fayre. It was said to have been a great success with hundreds of pounds raised.

* Four fashion shows were staged across the district by Marion Hamilton, from Carluke. It was estimated that £4,000 was raised by the effort with the money being split by Carluke Rotary Club, Carluke Parish Historical Society, Macmillan Nurses and Biggar High School PTA.

* Ten-year-old Camilla Geraghty was pictured trying on Taggart’s bunnet as actor Mark McManus visited Lanark and Carluke libraries to sign copies of his new book Taggart’s Glasgow. His appearance was part of the council’s participation in Scottish Book Fortnight.

* Celtic and Scotland captain Roy Aitken opened the sixth Clydesdale District School of Coaching weekend at the Inverclyde National Sports Centre in Largs. The defender spoke to more than 100 youngsters and coaches from across Clydesdale.
