They spent two hours first at a special empowerment seminar, in which they broke a wooden arrow by pushing it against a wall with their throats.

Then all of them marched and danced through the flames in their bare feet.

“It was fantastic,” said Karin Finegan, fundraiser for the charity which provides support for those with life-limiting illnesses.

“The people who were doing it got a two-hour seminar, and then they felt they were walking over cold flames; they did not feel any heat.

“They all walked it; none of them said ‘no’. It really is mind over matter.

“They walked over once and they had such a feeling of exhilaration they walked over it once again, then they walked over two by two, and then they were dancing over it!”

Provost Eileen Logan and Lanark councillor Catherine McClymont were among those taking the challenge.
