STRIKING up the organ this week is Pollokshields church — all in celebration of a milestone year for the instrument
itself.

The grand pipe organ played its inaugural recital on September 27, 1913 — 100 years ago to the day on Friday.

Residents of Pollokshields burgh commissioned the organ from Durham firm Harrison and Harrison, and, according to current organist Liam Devlin, “It’s a tribute not only to the vision of the members of the church then, but to all the generations since, that the organ is still in such a glorious condition and celebrating its 100th birthday in style.”

Reverend David Black, Pollokshields church minister, added: “The sounds fill the building beautifully, and it does make you think of how many times it has been played through Sunday services, weddings, funerals and special occasions.”

The centenary celebrations kicked off earlier this year, with a series of six lunchtime concerts — each for a different combination of instruments, from brass ensemble to chamber orchestra — and the church managed to raise a hefty £1,800 for numerous charities.

But for the anniversary celebration, Pollokshields welcomes a special guest — former York Minster organist and television presenter John Scott Whiteley, who will perform on the night.

The recital kicks off at 7pm, and tickets are £10, including a glass of wine.
