A celebration of women

WOMEN of East Renfrewshire unite once again next week to mark International Women’s Day.

Following the success of last year’s event, the annual celebration takes place in Clarkston again – this time at the library, on Friday, March 8.

The community event welcomes both men and women into the fold, and is aimed at recognising the achievements of local women – past, present and future – as well as promoting international causes.

Previous years have seen East Ren’s police and fire services and community carers setting up stall, as well as parent and child craft workshops, stalls and information from community groups.

This year’s event places an emphasis on men – and their role in putting a stop to domestic abuse.

Chair and annual organiser Rena McGuire explained: “On International Women’s Day we celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women, while highlighting that more needs to be done to stop inequality and violence against women.

“We are also taking the opportunity to raise awareness of the global White Ribbon Campaign, whose aim is to involve men in helping to end violence against women.

“The White Ribbon signifies a commitment to never commit, condone or remain silent about it.”

Mary Montague, East Renfrewshire council’s community services and safety convener, will also be attending.

Councillor Montague told The Extra: “Women experiencing any form of violence may be, for example, a man’s daughter, wife, mother, sister or friend.

“We need men to get involved in ending violence against women and to think about how they can contribute to tackling it.”

International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900s, and is now an official holiday in countries around the world, with many men giving small gifts to the women in their lives on March 8.
