Their achievements were celebrated at Kirkintilloch Learning Campus, where they were able to look forward to a range of new opportunities thanks to their qualifications.

The courses, lead by East Dunbartonshire Council, gave them the chance to learn about caring, wellbeing, self awareness and how to become a community champion.

Councillor Rhondda Geekie said: “Congratulations to all the learners who have completed courses – their hard work, dedication and positive attitudes are an inspiration.

“I hope these new achievements help to motivate and encourage individuals, families and communities in East Dunbartonshire.

“In particular I’m delighted that the ‘Getting Started In Care’ course has already helped two adults to gain employment, with more involved in voluntary care activities.

“Congratulations to all the learners involved and well done to all the Council colleagues – and partners in the community – who helped to support their learning journeys.”

More than 30 people celebrated their success at the event and it is hope they will all move on to further training or employment.

A total of 14 adults completed Getting Started in Care, which was an eight week programme bringing together unemployed East Dunbartonshire residents from various backgrounds with assistance and input from local care organisations and training providers.

Two of the participants have already gained employment and others are involved in a wide range of voluntary care activities.

Learners on the SQA Exploring Wellbeing course gained confidence and developed skills to enhance the wellbeing of their family and friends.

This was in partnership with GRACE or Group Recovery Aftercare Community Enterprise, and nine people finished the programme.

A self awareness course was led by the Council with partners including Citizens Advice Bureau and East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust and five people completed the course.

Participants in the Hillhead Community Champion programme are being encouraged to take ownership of what is happening in Hillhead, with workers providing support.

Training will continue to be provided for this.
