Sergeant George Cairns and Captain Iain Macdonald met each other while they were at the Camp Bastion Post Office.

Carluke postie George realised that Glasgow University computing technician Iain was sending a parcel to wife Claire 3,600 miles away and that he delivered their mail back home!

Six months had passed since the guys had returned home and the pair had a story or two to tell when they met at Carluke’s Railway Inn.

Iain (49) said: “It was great to have a catch-up with George. We’ve been so busy over the last few months so it was good that we could meet up so close to Armed Forces Day as well.

“I was on a seven month tour and it was pretty tough going. George had one of the most important jobs for all the guys as getting post, whether it be letters or parcels, is a real morale booster. The Railway Inn had bunting up and had a collection tin for Armed Forces Day, which was great.
