All the King’s horses

Cumbernauld former cavalryman Alex Alum didn’t get to ride a grey horse when he served in the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards – but he came face to face with the famous Scots Greys in Edinburgh recently.

Today’s tank regiment – technically “cavalry” – is the modern-day descendant of the Greys, who charged to glory and destruction at Waterloo on June 18, 1815.

As part of the bicentenary commemoration Alex, pictured right, joined hundreds of fellow veterans (including troopers in 1815 uniform) for a spectacular ceremony in Edinburgh. Alex also joined comrades at a display in Kilmarnock, birthplace of Ensign Ewart, who captured one of just two Napoleonic eagle standards taken in the battle.
