All-weather rugby pitch still causing neighbourhood feud

Arguments between GHA Rugby Club and neighbours are ongoing as a decision on plans for an all-weather pitch is expected in the new year.

The club has submitted a planning application to East Renfrewshire Council to create a 3G artificial surface pitch.

Residents worry that increased noise, floodlights and excess traffic will affect homes nearby, and campaigners say more than 200 objections have been submitted to ERC.

However, in a recent letter (published on December 10), Ronnie Jamieson, president of GHA RFC, complained that the club has not been given a chance to cooperate with residents.

He wrote that a meeting in November “was controlled in such a manner that the club was not allowed to make a planned presentation or closing statement, and the opportunity was missed to have a less confrontational meeting”.

Mr Jamieson added that GHA has “committed to not exceeding the planned use of 56 hours per week” and finished: “The club has a duty to provide adequate facilities which are safe, fit for purpose and modern. This project would do no more than that.”

Opposing residents soon responded (see p18-19): “GHA had ample time to talk to both the local community and its own members before or even just after submitting the application.

“We are not objecting to an upgraded rugby pitch but to an all-weather rugby, soccer and shinty pitch in use for nearly 60 hours a week.”

Campaigners expect a decision in January or February 2016.
