An international response on Carluke soldier!

We were told that Dixon Vallance has a great granddaughter, and a great great grandson living in the area, a great great granddaughter in Edinburgh and several great great great grandchildren, and several great great great great grandchildren.

One response came from a descendant in Manitoba (and would you please email me with your contact details!).

We also received an email from Grace Blackie, originally from Carluke but who emigrated to Australia in 1971.

Her great great great grandfather Adam Gibson also fought at Waterloo.

“Adam was a soldier in Captain Samual Reid’s Company, 1st Bn, 71st Regiment of Foot and as stated on his Discharge Papers was injured as a consequence of “Gun shot wounds to his left elbow and shoulder received in action with the enemy on 18 June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo”.

“His name is listed on the Waterloo Medal Roll 1815 and he later became a Chelsea Pensioner,” said Grace.

Adam was from Glasgow, but married a Mary McInnes living in Hamilton Street, Carluke and died there on April 5 1866 aged 72.

His daughter Janet (Gibson) Coats, Grace’s great great grandmother, registered the death.

Grace has not been able to trace where Adam was buried - living in Sydney she can’t walk around the old cemetery! She is sure he lies in the “Old” St Luke’s Cemetary at the foot of Carluke High Street but there may not even be a headstone. His wife Mary died in 1855 and records show she was buried in “Carluke Churchyard”.
