Appeal for information after man is shot in Yoker

The police are appealing for information after a shopkeeper was shot during an attempted robbery in Yoker yesterday (Sunday, January 24).

A man, holding what was believed to have been a handgun, threatened staff in the KOF Convenience Store, Dumbarton Road, Yoker, Glasgow, at around 11.20am, demanding money and stock. He shot a 23-year-old male staff member in the leg but ran off empty handed.

The suspect is described as young, white, approximately 5ft 8 tall and of thin build. He was dressed in dark clothing; black hooded jacket, black tracksuit trousers and had his face covered. He made off along Dumbarton Road towards Clydebank.

The injured staff member was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment. At this time his injuries are not life threatening and medical staff describe his condition as stable.

Detective Inspector Brian Gallagher, the officer leading the enquiry, said: “For someone to discharge a firearm over cash and cigarettes from a corner shop is just deplorable. One person injured is bad enough but this could have involved others – including children who could have been in the shop at the time.

“Officers are carrying out door to door enquiries and checking CCTV in an effort to trace this man who obviously has no concern for staff in the shop or the general public.

“We are still trying to establish whether he made off on foot or had a car nearby.

“The shop is near a busy road and there may have been a few people about. It’s possible the suspect had been hanging about the area prior to the incident, so if you have seen him or have any information that will help us with our enquiries, it is important that you contact the police.

“Additional uniformed patrols are in the area, please speak to them if you have any information to give.” Alternatively, call Drumchapel Police Office via 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to give information in confidence.
