Armistice 100: Remembrance Sunday events in East Renfrewshire

Residents, councillors, local dignitaries and veterans will meet together at services across the authority to pay their respects.

Events will begin with a service in Newton Mearns at the war memorial at Mearns Cross, which has been organised by the local branch of the British Legion.

The parade will leave Fairweather Hall at 10.50am to reach the memorial for 11am where a wreath-laying ceremony will take place.

A service will also be held at the Newton Mearns Synagogue, on Larchfield Avenue, commencing at 11.30am and Newton Mearns Baptist Church, from 9-10.45am.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at Newton Mearns Parish Church at 10.45am. Along with the 79th Glasgow Company Boys’ Brigade, the church is playing its part in Battle’s Over, an international commemoration marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War.

Buglers will sound the Last Post at over 1000 locations at 6.55pm. One of the Senior Boys will play the Last Post outside the front of the church.The church’s bells will be Ringing Out for Peace at 7pm.

In Neilston, a service will be held by Neilston War Memorial Association at the war memorial adjacent to St Thomas Church on Main Street at noon.

In Barrhead, a parade will leave the United Services Club at 2pm for a remembrance service at the war memorial in Cowan Park, from 2.30pm.

A service will be held at Giffnock South Parish Church, on Greenhill Avenue.

At 10.55am the Remembrance service will commence within the Church and afterwards the congregation will pay their respects by gathering around the War Memorial on Greenhill Avenue for the laying of wreaths and a short address by the Minister.

A joint service of Thanksgiving, for all the congregations of all faiths in the district plus a number of invited civic leaders, will commence, again at the War Memorial on at 7pm that evening.

The evening service thereafter will continue within Giffnock South Parish Church.

East Renfrewshire Provost Jim Fletcher said: “Remembrance Sunday gives us all an opportunity to mark the area’s fallen war heroes, honouring those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

“This day of remembrance gives us time to reflect, as well as showing our respect and gratitude to our armed forces. This year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and I am honoured to have the opportunity to be a part of these services.”
