Army cadets have a summer to remember

The youngsters joined a total of 300 from across central and western Scotland to travel to the camp near Liverpool.

They belong to F Squadron, part of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Battalion Army Cadet Force, and were accompanied by around 50 adult volunteer leaders, from all walks of life, who looked after them for the summer fortnight.

There was a real buzz as the cadets looked forward to meeting up with old friends, and making new ones, as well as tackling the tree top high ropes, clambering over the assault course, sleeping out under canvas, cooking Army rations, chasing the wind in sailing dinghies, improving their marksmanship, paddling dragon boats and generally having a great time.

Two weeks on, as the cadets head for home, they have done it all, as well as enjoying bowling, laser quest, discos, a formal senior cadet dinner and making friends for life. They have truly lived up to the cadet motto “To Inspire to Achieve.”

Cadets from the Squadron had a hugely successful camp. Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major, Natasha McSherry (18) of Kirkintilloch Detachment, played a key role in the welfare of the younger cadets at this, her last camp as a cadet.

Cadet Lance Corporal Susan Carr (16) of Kirkintilloch Detachment said “Being in cadets has made me more outgoing. I was quite shy and wouldn’t speak, but now I can talk to anybody. I’ve also gained leadership skills, which is good. I like being on the ranges best.”

Cadet Joseph Ash, from Kirkintilloch, marked his 16th birthday at camp, with his father, an instructor with the cadets, there to help him celebrate.

The Army Cadet Force is a national youth organisation open to boys and girls aged between 12 and 18 who are keen to have fun and enjoy adventure.

It’s sponsored by the Army but is not part of it and there is absolutely no commitment for members to join the Armed Forces.

The organisation offers young people the opportunity to develop self-confidence, teamwork, leadership and responsibility through a wide range of activities including sport, adventurous training, first aid, military skills and community activities.
