Award of great distinction for Cumbernauld Scientist Allan

A Cumbernauld resident has joined the ranks of Nobel Prize winners after receiving a rare honour for his work in biomedical science.

Allan Wilson (56) from Condorrat, who leads the biomedical team at Monklands Hospital, can now call himself an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists.

The NHS Lanarkshire employee is just the second non-medical professional to received this award as most of those honoured are doctors.

It was Allan’s work in the field of cytology, or study of cells, that led to him being recognised in such a prestigious way.

Allan said: “I am delighted to have become an honorary fellow.

“I’m very proud to receive this recognition because it is a rare honour.

“It is dominated by medical professionals but the college is now giving the honour to non-medical staff.

“I feel this honour also recognises the advanced role of biomedical scientists in cytology.

Allan has worked for NHS Lanarkshire for 27 years.

And his career to date has proved to be stimulating 
and varied around the 
world.

Prior to his work in Monklands, Allan worked at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

He also worked for a spell in New Zealand.

Royal College president Dr Suzy Lishman said: “This is the highest honour the college bestows.

“I congratulate Allan on receiving this recognition.”
