Awards for top young achievers

The hard work of 32 young people in East Dunbartonshire has been recognised at a
special awards ceremony
in the area.

Hillhead Community Centre was the venue for the
event held by East
Dunbartonshire Council’s
Positive Alternatives Project.

The ceremony recognised the efforts of the young
people who completed various
courses towards the end of 2014, including the John Muir Discovery Award and the
Saltire Award.

Young people and learners also successfully achieved an array of Scottish Credit Qualification recognised courses and
accredited personal and professional SCQF qualifications, from health and safety to
outdoor pursuits.

Awards were also presented to young people from the project’s School Leavers Programme, Jobs Education & Training Programme and for the first time, the Additional Support Needs Programme.

Councillor Eric Gotts,
convener of the council’s Education Committee said: “The Positive Achievements project works to reduce the number of young people leaving school without a positive destination.

“It has influenced the lives of many local young people over the years.

“These celebration events are so important for many reasons and I’m always delighted to attend.

“Firstly I feel strongly that we should always highlight success and celebrate achievement.

“What all of these young people have done this year has taken a great deal of time and commitment and they are to be applauded. It is right also we promote the work of this excellent project so that more and more local families can see just what opportunities are being provided for young people and what kinds of skills they can gain through these wonderful experiences.

“Lastly, it is an opportunity for us to thank the staff and volunteers who make it possible for us to offer young people a rich and varied menu of courses and activities.

“These all help build their confidence, improve their skill set and ultimately improve their chances of going on to do the course, job or training they want.”
