Back to the canvas for popular art show

One of the hits of last summer is due to make a return as the Art Village comes back to Shawlands Shopping Centre — with even more talented artists on display.

Last year, organisers counted 50 empty shop units in a relatively short area and decided to put them to good use and, hopefully, regenerate interest in the area.

The ongoing display of artists throughout the summer proved to be such a success that the concept has returned bigger than before.

More than 200 artists, designers, maker, animators, educators, producers and micro businesses are set to have their work displayed running right on into autumn.

The works of artists such as Peter Howson, John Bellany and Lesley Banks will be displayed over the summer.

A spokesman said: “We are delighted to announce the return of Art Village to Shawlands this May and an exciting, new residency that will stretch right across the summer and into autumn.

“At Art Village we showcase stimulating, provocative and engaging new works of art by the country’s most exciting and established talent.

“Alongside the exhibition spaces we’re also opening The Creation Space: a studio dedicated to creative art and craft workshops, activities and master classes aimed right across the range of technique and ability.

“From beginner classes to events tailored for professional practitioners, The Creation Space is your chance to embark on your own creative journey this summer under the helpful guidance of some of the best practitioners in town.”

The Art Village opens at 6pm on May 6.
