Benefits for Barrhead as site is developed

Barrhead is set to benefit from East Renfrewshire Council’s ongoing regeneration work in the area with the Nestle development.

And it is hoped that it could mean local job opportunities and new services on the doorstep of local people.

The area was once home to the Nestle pet food factory and part of a redundant water treatment works.

But now the council is working to attract developers to invest in the site, which is suitable for retail, business and leisure.

The area has been transformed through investment from the council and the community delivering new infrastructure to service the site and the waterworks garden.

Further investment in the site has been secured from the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal and Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund.

Through the Glasgow and Clyde Valley City Deal, ERC is investing more than £44 million in new business and leisure infrastructure, new homes and improved transportation links with Glasgow and beyond.

The opportunity is part of East Renfrewshire Council’s drive to attract ne investment into the area.

Convener for infrastructure and sustainable growth, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: “This is excellent news for local people and the town of Barrhead and will bring many fresh and exciting opportunities to the area.

“We have transformed Glasgow Road and the site is now suitable for a wide range of uses including retail, business and leisure — and we are working to attract developers to invest in Barrhead.”

The former site of the Nestle Purina factory, the company closed the site down some eleven years ago when it proved not to be 
profitable.

Some 200 workers were made redundant when the factory closed down in 2004.

It is hoped that companies and developers will be attracted to the area and provide a much-needed financial 
shot in the arm for Barrhead.
