DESPITE scores of objections, controversial plans for the new Biggar Primary School have been given the thumbs-up by councillors.

The existing school and sports hall, in South Back Road, will be demolished to make way for a modern three story building with car parking and a multi-use games pitch.

However, the decision will anger many in the town who believe the building is too large for the site and will not blend in to its surroundings and that the early 20th century original building should be maintained.

There have also been concerns over road safety at John’s Loan, near the school.

The plans had more than 70 objections, one of which was from the school’s own parent council.

It said: “The parent council has real concerns about the existing plans for the new school. The main concern relates to the potentially negative impact on pupil/pedestrian safety in the environs of the school.

Objectors are also angry at not being given the opportunity to present their objections to the Planning Committee.
