As previously reported in the Gazette, Biggar Little Brewery Ltd. has lodged a planning application with the council to convert the 150-year-old building into a leisure and entertainment complex.

The Listed Building was declared redundant in its latest role as Biggar Museum Trust’s Heritage Centre earlier this year.

Residents in the Kirkstyle/North Back Road area near the building seemed content with an earlier plan to convert the old kirk into flats.

But many now seem up in arms about the alternative scheme to turn it into a licensed premises with, they claim, a potential for over 200 customers coming and going each night.

Said one objector: “This proposed project will have a devastating impact on our lives, environment, privacy, house value and sleep.

“I was in full support of the original development plans for this property, to turn this beautiful and important building into private residential properties.

“But the neighbours are deeply unhappy and upset at the new proposals.”
