Blueprint handed in for long-awaited revamp to Cumbernauld bus station

And if it gets the green light, work will start in January.

Community groups and nearby business premises, including the offices of the Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle have been sent letters informing them that the planning process is underway.

And the proposals themselves are now available to view online at www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=32677

These reveal that the plans accommodate full height glass fronts to the passenger waiting areas, increased light and visibility to the bus stops, widened external pedestrian areas for ease of access.

Layouts will also be improved to to allow better passenger circulation and resurfacing of the bus stop areas.

With each bus stance on either side of the dual carriageway, there will be space for a kisok and improved lighting plus automatic doors.

Campsies Centres Chairman, Councillor Alan Graham said: “We now have a clear vision for the moderation of Cumbernauld bus stances which I believe will deliver significant improvements and create a contemporary facility for bus passengers.

“Community groups are being asked to view the proposals and the public have an opportunity to comment through the planning process.

“This is a key project for for Cumbernauld town centre, helping public facilities and encouraging increased use of public transport.”

Meanwhile Strathclyde Passenger Transport’s Director of bus operations Ronnie Park said: “There’s no doubt that these bus stances are long overdue an upgrade. We’ve been waiting a long time and haveovercome many challenges to get to this stage .

“We hope the passengers will like the enhanced facilities planned.”
