A consultation, which has now closed, laid out options that includes potentially closing or merging breakfast clubs to make budget savings.

There were four options which included discontinue breakfast clubs; keeping the clubs but increase the fee for those who pay.

‘Clustering’ clubs was another option, offering a single club in one school that covers breakfast provision for pupils from neighbouring schools whereby children would attend the breakfast club and then make their way to their own school.

A fourth option would be to discontinue breakfast clubs that do not meet certain criteria; for example, number of children attending versus the cost to run the breakfast club.

The council stated: “The purpose of the consultation is to consider ways to reduce the subsidy of £2m that Glasgow City Council currently invests in breakfast club provision.

“Glasgow City Council wishes to minimise the impact of any changes to working families and those children in receipt of free breakfast.”
