Bridge closed because of safety fears

A pedestrian bridge over the Luggie Water has been closed due to safety concerns.

Westergartshore Footbridge - between Pit Road and Chryston Road - was closed last week after inspections flagged up concerns.

Thomas Glen, Depute Chief Executive - Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets at East Dunbartonshire Council said: “During an inspection by the Council’s structures engineer, extensive corrosion and pitting throughout the structural steelwork of the five-span crossing was noted.

“Structural engineering consultants were then brought in to carry out a more detailed inspection and assess the load-carrying capacity of the bridge.

“The assessment concluded that the structure is not fit for purpose, which meant we had to take immediate action.

“We apologise for the lack of advance warning, but in this case we had to act swiftly in the interests of public safety.

“We appreciate this is a popular route with local residents and visitors to the Luggie Glen and are examining options for the bridge and route.”

Works are ongoing on options and further information will be provided once these are completed.
