British Empire Medal for founder of arts and crafts charity

Nan Middleton (67) from Milngavie set up the Creative Care charity in 1999, which has been based at Brackenbrae House in Bishopbriggs for the last six years.

The charity was built on the 3D decoupage papercrafting classes which began in 1978 in Craigdhu School in Milngavie.

Before its move to Bishopbriggs the group was based in the courtroom area of Milngavie Town Hall. Two hundred people attended classes there each week including adults with additional support needs and their carers.

The group has flourished after putting down roots in Bishopbriggs and in 2013 was given the Queens Award for Services to the Voluntary Sector, the equivalent of an MBE for charities.

The BEM was awarded to her as part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations.

Nan Middleton said: “This BEM is the icing on the cake, I’m absolutely delighted.”

Classes at Brackenbrae are open to all sectors of the community and are suitable for all ages and abilities.

A variety of different crafts are now available. Pupils are encouraged to be creative and go at their own pace. All teachers and helpers are volunteers.
