Building blocks are needed to fight poverty

Oxfam built a five-foot high wall outside Motherwell Library on Monday highlighting the charity's policy priorities for the Scottish Parliament.

The wall symbolises the ‘building blocks’ Oxfam believes the Scottish Parliament can put in place to help reduce extreme economic in Scotland and around the world, in order to help reduce poverty.

Oxfam also wants to encourage people to attend the Oxfam Candidate Cafe, which is taking place in the GLO Centre, Motherwell, this Monday (February 29) from 5.30-7.30pm.

Lisa Stewart, Oxfam campaigns and communications manager, said: “At the Oxfam Candidate Cafe, local people can discuss issues they care about with candidates from the five parties currently represented in Parliament.

“By taking part, people can have their say, and can find out more about Oxfam’s vision for a more equal Scotland within a more equal world.”

The series of Candidate Cafes are being organised by Oxfam Scotland in partnership with Stop Climate Chaos Scotland.

Lisa said: “Scotland shouldn’t live with poverty, here or anywhere.

“Our politicians have a duty to do all they can to end it and we hope the Candidate Cafe gives people the chance to influence all of the parties’ pre-election promises.”
