Call for direct Lanark to Edinburgh rail link return

A CALL for the return of a direct Lanark to Edinburgh passenger train link has been made in the week that a £5 billion package of improvements to Scotland’s rail network was announced.

While millions are to be spent over the next five years on projects like rebuilding the Borders railway network, it would cost “relatively little” to restore services between the Royal Burgh and the capital city after a break of almost half a century.

That claim comes from Lanark’s Independent councillor on South Lanarkshire Council, Ed Archer, in the week that Network Rail unveiled its huge Scottish investment package.

He said: “Think of all the benefits such a new link would bring. There are plenty of young Lanarkians attending colleges and universities in Edinburgh; there are a lot of people from our area now who work in the capital and have to commute using a change of train at Carluke.

“There are also the huge benefits to the area’s tourism from people visiting Edinburgh finding it easy to take just a single, short train journey to see Lanark. It would be a major boon to Lanark, no matter how you look at it.”
