Carluke couple's 60 years of marriage

Sheila and Tom Smart are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

They met at Newarthill Church’s badminton club in 1954 and were engaged within six weeks, but Sheila’s mum was adamant that there would be no wedding before she turned 21.

They married on September 15, 1956, the day after Sheila’s 21st birthday, at Newarthill Parish Church.

After eight happy years they started their family with their son Douglas and eight years later the family unit was completed with their daughter Lesley.

In 1972 the family moved to their home in Carluke, where they still stay.

After the children were well into their school years, Sheila starting working in Carluke Health Centre and she was a receptionist there for 21 years.

They have four grandchildren Kris, Jordan, Maude and Martha.
