Carluke High Mill fight heads to Holyrood

As the Gazette went to press, members of the Steering Group – which is part of Carluke Development Trust – made their way to Holyrood to meet Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop as the campaign to save the historic 18th century structure gathers pace.

The move comes in the wake of a “substantial five-figure” grant from Historic Scotland Ancient Monuments Fund.

Carluke Development Trust manager Kathleen Feeney said: “The involvement with Historic Scotland is huge because it means that the Government iteself has looked at the project and thinks that it is worthwhile.

“It is an aspirational project and because of that it has really moved forward in the past six to eight months.

“The work that the members of the steering group have done over that time has been incredible.

“And getting Historic Scotland involved gives the High Mill a major stamp of credibility.”

As well as backing from Historic Scotland, the High Mill project has also received tremendous backing from the public with donations totalling more than £13,000.

In addition to Clydesdale locals donating to the cause, former Carluke residents and descendants of former Carlukians have also contributed, with the most recent being from Chicago.
