Carry a light for Lanark’s lost lads of WW1

ON Monday night a sea of lights on Lanark High Street will honour the 234 mostly young men of the town whose lives were prematurely snuffed out in World War One.

Final plans for Lanark’s official homage marking the centenary of the outbreak of that conflict at 11pm on August 4, 1914 have now been agreed and will include a roll-call of the fallen at the Memorial Hall followed by a procession to the Cross, 234 of today’s citizens bearing a light to represent each of the lost lads.

The light-bearers, however, will not, as originally planned, be carrying a burning candle or torch but a luminous ‘light stick’ instead.
