Cash boost welcomed for agencies which help people cope with welfare reforms

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the Scottish Government is directing a new package of funding that will see a cash injection of £300,000 for services such as those provided by Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS).

The setting up of a new £1.7million fund to provide direct support to advice services and a further £3.4 million to be spent over the next two years on helping organisations mitigate the impacts welfare reforms.

Mr Crawford said: “The Scottish Government is stepping in to help advice staff who are doing their utmost to keep up with the demand from people who need help as a result of the changes to the benefit system.

“This is further evidence of the difference in approach between a Scottish Government that cares, and UK Government making ideologically-driven cuts as an attack on the welfare state.

“Advice centre workers are working tirelessly, and under enormous pressure, to help those who are now struggling with putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads as a direct consequence of welfare reforms.”
