Cast your vote

X marks the spot across the UK today (Thursday) as voters turn out for a hotly contested general election.

Labour MP Tom Harris faces up to Scottish National Party candidate Stewart McDonald, Scottish Conservative candidate Kyle Thornton, Liberal Democrat Ewan Hoyle and Scottish Green Alastair Whitelaw for a chance to represent Glasgow South at Westminster.

And it’s all eyes on East Renfrewshire as current MP and Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy defends his long-held seat against Kirsten Oswald for SNP, Conservative man David Montgomery, Liberal Democrat Graeme Cowie and UKIP candidate Robert Malyn.

Ballots opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm.

Until then, East Renfrewshire Council chief executive Lorraine McMillan urges voters to check their polling cards.

She said: “Please take a minute to check your card so you know where to cast your vote, to avoid a wasted journey.

“We want to make sure everyone’s vote counts — the safest way to do this is to only put one X beside the candidate of your choice.”

The Extra asked each candidate to share their final bid for votes as the polls open — turn to pages 18-19 for statements from East Ren and p20-21 for the Glasgow South hopefuls.
