Celebrate Clyde Valley fruit tomorrow

The popular event will feature some of the local produce offered for sale at Overton Farmers’ Market alongside a local crafts tent, live music, a variety of children’s activities including sand art, a welly-recycling competition and the start of activities being staged by the Clyde and Avon Valleys Partnership through its new Local Landscape Heroes project.

The Clyde Valley Orchards Co-operative will be pressing fresh apples throughout the day, letting visitors see the whole apple-to-bottle process, drawing on a long tradition of fruit-growing and market gardening in the Clyde Valley, famed as the Fruit Basket of Scotland.

The juice produced will be on sale during the day.

Entries to this year’s welly-recycling contest are now invited. The competition is open to all families, nurseries and primary schools, and everyone is encouraged to be as creative as possible.

The day will involve interactive local food demonstrations and a chance to sample some special healthy recipes. Children can ‘turn their own toy’ from local wood with Strathclyde Woodturners and ‘kids’ of all ages can make their own bird feeders with RSPB Scotland. Strathaven Jazz Band aim to have everyone dancing round the stalls with their live music sets and there will be lots of fun and hands on activities for children.

Fruit Day is organised by Overton Farm, the Rural Development Trust, Clyde Valley Orchards Cooperative Ltd and Lanarkshire Farmers’ Market. It is supported by Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership and South Lanarkshire Council.
