The group will include local councillors and representatives from the community to work with council officers to find a suitable location for the hub and the kind of services and facilities that it will provide.

Milngavie Councillor Eric Gotts put forward a motion for the Champions Group to be established at a recent council meeting which was agreed.

Mr Gotts wants the group to be set up after the summer recess in the financial year 2016/17.

He said: “Capital resources have been set aside in financial years 2018/19 and 2019/20 for the much anticipated community hub in Milngavie.

“The establishing of one-stop shops, now generally known as community hubs, has been a very important aspiration for members of the council since it was set up 20 years ago.

“Bringing together a wide range of council services and other community services under one roof in an exciting and innovative way was seen as a means to deliver services in a more efficient way as well as supporting town centre regeneration.

“While progress towards this bold initiative was slow in the early life of this council, this cannot be said of hub developments in recent years.

“It is certainly the time to tap into the renewed community energy in Milngavie to ensure that the hub development has the community ownership that fully meets people’s needs and aspirations.

“Milngavie, unlike other towns, is in the enviable position of having a plethora of sites which could be seriously considered for the location of its community hub.

“It is very important that the council gets this decision right for the Milngavie community no matter how long it takes.”

Councillor Gotts says that possible venues for the community hub include the CE Centre/library, the town hall, the Fraser Centre - with the possibility of creating a second floor and the former St Joseph’s Primary School building which will become vacant.
