Charity fun run back for another year

REGISTRATION is open for one of the biggest races in the Scottish sporting calendar.

This year, the Men’s 10K will become a whole weekend event, with a rascal run for kids on the Saturday.

More than 4,000 men take part in race — which starts and finishes in Bellahouston Park and runs through Pollok Park — to mark Father’s Day each year.

Registration for the race — which takes place on June 15 — is open now and you can register up until the week before.

The annual men-only 10k is aimed at raising awareness of men’s health issues in Scotland, and helping to get Scotland fitter and healthier , with around 40 per cent of the men taking part having never entered a running event before.

Event organiser Sarah McMillan said: “The life expectancy of a man in Scotland is, shockingly, still the lowest in Europe.

“Suicide, in addition to other mental health problems, continues to be an issue of high significance to men in Scotland. Suicide is the biggest killer of young people (18-34) in Scotland and almost three out of four suicides are by men.

“Our aim is to help change this, little by little — and the Men’s 10k is how we are doing it.

“It has already had a huge impact on many men’s lives. Some of them sign up to the event as an incentive to help get fit or to quit smoking or to lose weight. And as a result of taking part in the 10k have become new men.”

Saturday’s Rascal Run, meanwhile, is open to all kids up to 14 years old, male or female. The kilometre-long race will be in association with Yorkhill Children’s Charity.

Also on Saturday, there will be a family 3k and a Men’s 5k, as well as entertainment, food, comedians and speakers in the evening.
