Children 'refuse to use toilets' at Milngavie Primary

Work that was meant to be carried out to improve the toilets at Milngavie Primary School over the Easter holiday was delayed because the council was unable to get a tender that met legal requirements.

They now aim to have the refurbishment carried out over the summer holidays.

However a grandparent has complained about the state of the toilets at the school and says they need to be improved urgently because children are refusing to use them all day.

The woman, who asked not to be named, claims that children are “holding it in until they get home”, because “the school toilets are dirty, there’s never any soap in them, they don’t always flush and often have faeces floating in them”.

She says the toilets are old, dilapidated and not fit for purpose.

Thomas Glen, depute chief executive of East Dunbartonshire Council’s place, neighbourhood and corporate assets, said: “As part of a formal tender process, we invited bids for this work with the aim that all toilet cubicles, wash hand basins, toilet cubicles, vanity units and flooring would be replaced during the Easterholidays.

“We followed all required legal and procurement procedures and the tenders returned were non-compliant leading to a necessary delay.

“We are re-tendering and hope to appoint quickly so that the work can be completed over the summer holidays. Toilet supplies are checked and replenished regularly throughout the day and we will monitor the situation closely.”
