Christmas appeal is off to flying start

The Clydesdale charity set up to help the homeless back into accommodation runs the appeal annually, to provide new (not used) toys for youngsters and a whole Christmas dinner with all the trimmings for families.

“We have received a lot of donations already - people have been coming to the door and dropping things off, and we know there are people out there gathering for us,” said convener Mary McLellan.

“Border Biscuits came in with ten boxes of biscuits, in response to the appeal, and we have already had some small but very worthwhile financial donations.”

Last year the charity delivered Christmas toy sacks to 125 children, and 75 Christmas Food Hampers to families, and they expect the need to be even greater this year as referrals are already higher than last year’s.

The appeal is for new toys, books, and drawing materials, and presents suitable for older children, teenagers aged 13 to 16.

Now three premises are open to receive donations from 10am until noon each day at the New Beginnings base in Wilton Road cemetery lodge, Carluke, at its furniture project at Hamilton Street, Carluke, and at the Bridge off St Leonard Street in Lanark (visitors should use the back entrance).
