Clarkston kids take charity trip of a lifetime

The 17-year-olds, both from Clarkston, have just returned from the town of Nakuru, where they took part in a project to build a toilet block, as well as lend a hand to the local kids.

The girls planned the trip themselves, investigating Kenya’s culture, history and geography before setting off — also organising gifts for the children they would be working with.

Suzanne and Eilidh stayed with a Kenyan family, and said they were made to feel “extremely welcome”.

They told The Extra: “Our project consisted of 16 volunteers from all parts of the world.

“We achieved our goals; building the toilet block, working in the orphanage with the kids — and at the same time enjoying the trip of a lifetime. It has been a great experience for us both, and we would love to do it again.

“We learned a lot, and have seen how everyday life is for the children of Kenya — the struggles they face because they live in poverty.

“But we also saw how good they are at playing, even with nothing — and that they can be happy, despite their situation.”
