Clutha appeal nets significant donation

Stars of sport, politics and media took part in a football tournament at Toryglen Football Centre to raise money for the fund, which was established to support those affected by last year’s tragedy.

Langside councillor Archie Graham led a team of Glasgow city councillors in their bid for the Clutha shield.

He told The Extra: “In the aftermath of the devastating Clutha Vaults helicopter crash last year, people all over Glasgow and Scotland came together to offer support and condolence to those affected. That attitude was reflected in this tournament.

“It’s important that we continue to support the Clutha Appeal Fund, and the individuals and families affected by this tragedy.”

Elected members faced stiff competition from Glasgow Life, Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance service teams.

A team of parliamentarians, captained by Eastwood MSP Ken Macintosh, were also in action.

The Lord Provost’s Select, comprising of famous names and faces from the world of Scottish football, including Queen’s Park manager Gus MacPherson, eventually won the tournament, defeating Police Scotland 3-2 in the final.

The event raised £1,500 in total — while Glasgow Girls FC also made a presentation of a £500 cheque to Bailie Allan Stewart towards the appeal Fund.

The appeal for funds for people affected by the tragic incident at the Clutha Vaults has attracted donations of more than £220,000. To donate, call 287 7878.
