ALTHOUGH the country is officially out of recession, hundreds of poverty stricken families continue to rely on Clydesdale Food Bank in Carluke’s Hamilton Street to get their groceries.

There have been no fewer than 245 referrals to the emergency service since January, helping at least 400 local folk living on the breadline to survive.

Clydesdale Food Bank volunteer James Robb (71) and his friend John Lowe, both of Carluke, are currently walking the 96-mile West Highland Way in a bold bid to add over £1000 in sponsorship cash to the coffers.

Food Bank co-ordinator Liz Paton said: “Fundraising is absolutely vital because it gives us money to buy fresh food for users of our service.”
