Lanark MBE John Barrie (80), who’s been honoured for 65 years’ service to badminton, said: “I’m surprised but absolutely delighted.”

Jim Forrest, who has given 40 years’ commitment to boys football team Kirkfield United, said: “I’m sure the atmosphere when I’m carrying the baton for a 200m stretch will be similar to that produced by the Lanark High Street crowd when I rode past as Lord Cornet on Lanimer Day 1998.”

Forth Road Runners stalwart Jim Paton (75) has worked tirelessly with the club for 30 years. He said: “I’ve been coaching since I was 29 because I enjoy working with people.”

Lanark Swimming Club secretary/team manager Mary Kelly (73) said: “I’m really looking forward to carrying the baton,”

Crossford’s Lynn Weir (50), who has been a Guide Leader for the past 32 years, said: “I enjoy passing on my knowledge to the Guides and making sure they are competent in map reading, compass use, first aid and camp craft.”

Diana McDonald, who has given 23 years service to Lanark and Upperward Pony Club, said: “I’m delighted and honoured at being chosen. My family and friends are over the moon.”

Carluke’s John Allan (63), who has coached Crawforddyke Primary School football team since 1988, said: “I’m honoured to be picked to carry the baton.”
