Coalburn Gala Day 2015 Slideshow

THIS year’s Coalburn Gala – which saw the crowning of Queen Brooke Brown – was rated to be as spectacularly successful as any staged in the past 70 years.

The glowing assessment came from long time Coalburn resident Jim McLean, who said that Queen Brooke (11) and her court looked great and performed their respective roles splendidly.

“This year’s gala was as good as any we have ever had,” Jim said.

“The children in the gala court all did very well and Queen Brooke looked lovely.”

Sticking with tradition, this year’s Queen was crowned by the previous year’s incumbent, 2014 Coalburn Gala Queen Niamh Adam.

Although it rained at the start of the day and there were further showers, Jim said that there had been a “marvellous” response from villagers.

Big crowds watched an impressive parade through the village – led by Coalburn IOR Pipe Band – before Brooke’s crowning on a stage off School Road.

Best overall procession entry went to The Wizard of Oz, while Coalburn Toddlers won the Best Lorry prize for their motorised pageant Under The Sea.

“It was a great parade,” Jim said. “The amount of people who dressed up was unreal.”

Running and sphering competitions were staged in the public park, with other attractions including bouncy castles, slides and a burger van. Old school photos of villagers were displayed in the leisure centre.

Freelance photographer Sarah Peters was on hand to capture the action and her pictures are featured in our slideshow, created by Johnston Press Scotland communities hub deputy editor Julie Currie. Enjoy – and if you see photos you like, remember you can purchase them on our website!
