Collumb takes honours in second week

Some interesting matches were on view in the club. Club champion Martin Cook and veteran Davie Hutchison took to the baize in the pre-lim. Cook looked a bit nervy in the match as the Carbrain cueman took the first frame and followed up with a 48 break in the second to seal the match.

In the bottom half of the draw John Tallent, fresh from his break down south, came through a few tough matches. John disposed of Gary Somerville and young prospect Ross Higgins only to come a cropper against the experienced Pat Killen, losing out on the final black. John looked gutted when he came of the table as he battled hard to get to the next round.

Bellshill potter John Slaven is fast becoming a regular semi-finalist in the event. Slaven took care of Bill Munro and Davie Hutchison only to find Gary Coats, known as the cue doctor, a bit of a handful. Gary is an expert on repairing cues and tips in the club. Coats beat John 2-1 to set up a final against Michael Collumb.

Michael has been awayrecently and beating tour players such as Jamie Jones and Mark King, so Coats was up against it right from the start. Michael who had a 105 break in an earlier round didn’t waste any time taking the match in jig time by two frames to nil.

Nineteen players turned out for this week’s event. £40 goes to Collumb with Coats picking up £20 for his efforts and Pat Killen and John Slaven £10 each for the semis.

Congratulations to Mark Boyle on winning the paradise windfall at Celtic Park. Boyle, who is the number one pool player and a handy snooker player in the club, won £12,000 on his first visit to Celtic Park for some time.
