Community crusaders clean up for Kirkhill

The school’s eco committee have taken a Clean Up Scotland pledge — a Keep Scotland Beautiful initiative — on behalf of their fellow pupils, and have been picking up litter on the streets andin the parks.

The Kirkhill kids even set a homework task for pupils and families, sending home yellow tabards to wear while out and about picking up rubbish.

The children are also blogging about their efforts, and posting photographs of teams in action.

Principal teacher Lisa David told The Extra: “We are very proud of everyone — it’s so important that our pupils are aware of the negative impact of litter in the places they live, learn and play.

“This whole school approach, led by the children themselves, certainly goes a long way towards teaching them a sense of responsibility.”

The campaign ties in with the school’s Slam Dunk the Junk campaign, encouraging pupils to keep the playground clean and tidy.

All that hard work isn’t without reward, as a group of Kirkhill kids were spotted litter picking recently by staff at a local restaurant, who gave them two free pizzas for their efforts — while another neighbour thanked the children personally with treats.
