Concerns over council school bus travel proposals

Previously pupils who lived more than two miles away from the area’s four secondary schools were entitled to free bus travel to and from their school.

However, with South Lanarkshire Council’s budget being cut by £17.6 million in this financial year the local authority has extended that to three miles.

The move has angered some parents – particularly of those pupils who live in the remotest parts of Clydesdale.

Clydesdale MSP Aileen Campbell confirmed that she has written to the council outlining parents’ concerns about the proposals.

In the council’s consultation document, SLC stated that education resources accounts for 45 per cent of the council’s budget.

But due to education being viewed as a top priority it contributed to only 13 per cent towards the savings package.

The public meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 21, from 6pm to 8pm at Lanark Grammar School.

A consultation document will be available on the council’s website and paper copies will be available in schools, libraries and Q&A offices.
