Condorrat Primary flies the flag

The Green Flag is a European award granted to “Eco Schools” - schools which have demonstrated a solid commitment to the environment such as operating a series of recycling schemes.

Condorrat Primary’s recognition is the culmination of some five years’ hard work within the school by pupils, staff and parents, so understandably it was a big occasion for the school when they finally earned the right to fly their very own green flag.

The projects were driven by the pupils themselves who also accompanied a Eco-Schools representative on a tour of the school to show her all of their projects.

Primary 7 pupil Cameron Riddell said: “We have set up a recycling rota at the school and all the classes do litter picking in the playground. Parent helpers have also created a nursery garden in the school and pupils also made posters which are next to every light switch reminding people to turn off the lights and save energy. We also recycle pens, batteries and printer cartridges and have joined the RSPB’s Birdwatch.

“This is the first time the school has been given an Eco Flag and to celebrate the pupils all made their own mini flags with the school winners being given plant pots as prizes. They were Aaron Weir and Karleen Rennie.”

Julie-Ann Grice, head teacher, added: “This was a pupil driven endeavour and I’m very proud of everybody who has helped us. We will be working hard to maintain this standard and retainthe flag.”
