Conor gives back on Yorkhill walk

Busby boy Conor Blair is on the fundraising trail for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Yorkhill as a thankyou for his own treatment.

The 10-year-old (entering P7 at St Joseph’s Primary this week) has spent the last few years in and out of the hospital, having been diagnosed with diabetes insipidus at the age of two.

Mum Lisa told The Extra: “It’s very rare. As well as lethargy, headaches and dizzy spells, he was also having pains in his leg for a few years which would come and go — this got progressively worse and his leg was locking, which meant he was falling over a lot and hurting himself.

“MRI scan results showed a rare bone and joint condition, which means he hasn’t been allowed to do any sports at all for the best part of a year, and it’s been like the end of his world — he had loved football, running and climbing. He was just a typical boy.”

Still, Conor isn’t going to let the crutches he needs now and then get in the way of charity work, as the youngster sets out on a five mile walk in aid of Yorkhill on August 23.

Lisa continued: “He hopes the money will go towards entertaining the children in the wards, to go on day trips or to help put more toys in the clinic areas for children his age.”

Conor’s last scan showed small signs of healing — but the sponsored walk will still prove a challenge.

Mum and dad will be walking with him along the way, and Lisa added: “He might experience some pain during the walk, and if so he’ll use his crutches — he is determined he wants to do it to help others and we are incredibly proud of him.

“Conor has been training every day, cycling gently and walking.

“He has a while to go, but the day he was told there was progress, he was just the happiest boy ever.

“We know that there are lots of children a lot worseoff than Conor and he just wanted to try and help them.”

The young fundraiser is well on his way to smashing a £400 target — to add to his total, visit www.justgiving.com/Lisa-Blair3 or text CON50 to 70070 to donate £1.

Conor hopes to continue with his fundraising with events throughout the school year.
